FAQS

Do I need a referral for therapy, and how do I get one?

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist at Macquarie Psychology as a private client – you can contact us directly and book an appointment.

However, a referral is usually required if you want to claim rebates or funded sessions through:
– Medicare (via a Mental Health Treatment Plan)
– DVA
– Some workers’ compensation, MAIB, NDIS or other funded programs

Medicare (Mental Health Treatment Plan)

To access Medicare rebates for psychology sessions, you will usually need:
– An appointment with your GP or psychiatrist
– A Mental Health Treatment Plan (sometimes called a “mental health care plan”)
– A referral letter that names Macquarie Psychology and/or a specific clinician, if your doctor wishes

Bring your Medicare card and referral paperwork to your first session (or have it emailed or faxed to us by your GP).

Other funded referrals

For other funding schemes (e.g. DVA, some workers’ compensation or MAIB claims), the referral process is set by the insurer, agency or referrer. You will usually need:
– A referral letter from your GP or treating specialist, and
– Confirmation that funding has been approved

If you’re unsure what kind of referral you need, you can:
– Ask your GP what they recommend, or
– Contact our reception team with brief details, and we can let you know what is required for your situation.
