FAQS

What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan (mental health care plan)?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan (often called a “mental health care plan”) is prepared by a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician when they assess that you have a mental health condition that would benefit from structured treatment.

With a valid plan and referral, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year. Your GP will usually refer you for an initial block of sessions and then review your progress and decide whether to refer for more.

The plan itself stays active beyond a single year, but Medicare rebates reset each calendar year. Your psychologist will advise you if your need to see your GP to update or review your plan.
